Airbox butterfly valve?

Airbox butterfly valve?
Hey all, remember me? Sorry its been awhile but with the Air Force and College I have extremely busy. Anyways, if any of you don't know i now drive a 97 prelude. I was tearing into the stock airbox tonight and down inside the fender, there is a vacuum controlled butterfly valve on one of the intake tubes. It is open when the car is off but shuts when turned on. Have any of you seen this before and know what the use of it is?

RE: Airbox butterfly valve?
Well I drove the car last night without the bottom section of the stock intake. And for some reason the VTEC crossover was way not as noticable. I really didn't feel any improvement over the entire stock intake except that it sounded some what more throaty. Im thinking that the closed butterfly valve on the intake might open when the VTEC kicks in. I will try and post some pics of it later on today.

RE: Airbox butterfly valve?
Well as if anyone cared about my question i believe i found an answer. I think that the butterfly valve is closed while the engine is cold so the air it gets is warmer. Or that it just doesn't get as much cold air.
