Default Airbox/Filter...Help.

Aright everyone, just brought myself an N reg 1.3 Civic Marlin.

I was thinking about getting the K&N replacemeant airbox/filter mainly to give the engine a louder roar, but after looking at a picture it looks as if the K&N is just like a standard Honda airbox with the sides removed.

This leads me to the idea that, could I just drill holes in the side of my standard airbox and have the same effect?

Is it safe, and has anyone else done it?

Thanks.

I would say that it's safe to do so. Just make sure you cut out as much as possible to allow for maximum air to get at the filter, while leaving enough to protect the filter from any water splashing on it.

I see I see, thanks.

Just had a fiddle about and the airbox has a clip/bolt down 'lid' on top, would it be better to drill holes in this?

Then there would be less chance of water getting in as it is ontop.

Final thing, will drilling holes in the air box actually give me any more sound?

Thanks.

The car I have now (not a Civic), I just removed the top half of the airbox and my SRI filter just sits on top of the remainder of the airbox. I've had it like this for over 3 years, and haven't had any water problems at all, even though 80% of the filter is exposed.

Yes, I think your noise level will increase if you drill any holes in the airbox. You'll probably hear a bit of a hissing noise from the added air being sucked in.
