Hi, i have been told that if an aftermarket intake is purchased it is a goo idea to get a breather filter(s). Is this true and also what do breather filters and are they easy to fit.

I think you are referring to a bypass valve. Its only useful on cold air intakes... because the filter is relocated so close to the ground that it increases the chance of the filter being covered in water... resulting in hydrolock (which will seize up your engine). The bypass valve is placed up high, closer to the throttlebody, and opens up to let in air when it senses the filter is clogged. Installation requires you to cut your intake (with a hacksaw or whatever) and fit this piece into the tubing. Its very easy... after you cut your intake pipe, haha.

 

no its not a bypass valve im talking about. it is a breather filter or crank case ventilation filter. any ideas? it is supposed to stop oily vapours entering the injection system apparently. i would like to know if they are easy to fit and where on the engine they go.

there easy to work with and are to be installed where the hose from the intake arm to the valve cover go. it replaces the line on both ends. altough this may reduce vapors from being re-introduced into the engine, the pcv system does serve a purpose. it allows for longer oil life by recirculating fuel vpors out of the oil and back into the intake track. also the pcv system aids in piston ring sealing.

 

This allows the head to have it's own filter as apposed to sharing one with the intake manifold. They're cool but the air going to the head wont be.

 

dont help anything really? i remember seeing them and never figured where they were suposed to go... i see them at pepboys all the time. are they something that you guys use?

 

the're mainly just for looks and don't really help performance any. they go on the top left corner of the valve cover on civics. i got one just because i was trying to clean up my engine bay. but like ntx said, the air they intake will be warmer.

 

ive heard bad stories of those gases igniting....
