Just took my 1991 DX hatch for inspection and they're telling me I need a new exhaust -- everything behind the catalytic converter (which was replaced for last year's inspection by a different shop).

Thing is, this is all new about 3 years ago. The mechanic is saying that with older cars the exhaust goes every few years. He's telling me it's leaking all over the place, and the cost is over $500 (NY City prices!).

I park it outside year round. I drive it seldom in the winter and mainly on weekends in the summer, but for long distances. Does this sound legit or fishy to anyone else?

 

Get a second opinion from a different inspection shop. Also consider taking the car back to the shop that did the most recent exhaust system work. Ask them why their new exhaust system has already failed.

 

I agree. Most shop exhaust systems are aluminized steel and while they will eventually rust, it shouldn't happen within 3 years. Short-trip driving will accelerate corrosion of the pipes, however, since moisture in the pipe never has a chance to evaporate. A good catback, like a Magnaflow, is all-stainless steel and should never rust. Many have million-mile warranties.
