Default Should I upgrade? My LX ex. manifold leaks

My 1999 civic lx exhaust manifold has a small hole. I am new to the civic world. I know this is a low end model. It has 150,000 miles on it. I can't get another one just yet. Should I invest in a new exhaust system, such as headers, etc., if such upgrades are possible for LX owners? This kind of project has benefits you wouldn't initially think about. It gives me time to be with my son working together on a project. I would even consider dropping in a v-tech engine next year. Also, I would put in big disc brakes front and back. I just got this car for him. So far I have $5,000 into this car. Or should I not invest, braze the manifold hole, and look for a better car with more options that we can work on?
Sorry if this question is a tired one, but I did search and no one has an answer about upgrading LX's
