rim upgrade = computer upgrade???

rim upgrade = computer upgrade???
Someone told me today that in some newer vehicles, you need to upgrade your chipset on your cars computer to compensate for rim and tire diameter changes, otherwise it would throw off gas mileage and other calculations.
Anyone ever heard that, I hadn't until today.

well it will probably change the gas mileage anyyway due to wheel wieght and whatnot, but i dont think its neceassary to switch your ECU becaseu of new wheels. I've never heard of that.

RE: rim upgrade = computer upgrade???
well kinda.... but not very often... but its not computer related but sensor related
people change them out when runnen larger or smaller tires due to the total diameter change...... more popular on trucks...
but as long as ya buy tires that are same diamater it shouldnt need it...
another would be if they have them air sensors in the valve stems... but with those its preaty much just switchen the valve stems with the factory ones.... but those i believe are only on SOME preaty new cars....
and with tire weight ya that will change your gas milage... if ya get lighter smaller rims you should get beter heavier larger rims of course worse milage BUT as long as you buy proper size tires it should be fine!

yes, people calibrate the chipset to compensate for the new rim and tire diameter to give a proper readout on the speedo and odometer, but only on newer models where the speed and mileage are all digital, our cars aren't able.

ya its only availble on some cars as well.... my 95truck is able to but with it its a reprogramed chip... with that chip it does the typical performance mods, tire size corrections for the speedo and even the rev limiter and speed limiter...
realy easy to swap outta my trucks computer......
so now my trucks got beter performance and no speed limiter. tho i only tested it out once andn it worked or should i say didnt work. LOL
so no tranny kick out....
tho i ended up pullen the chip out thinking it might help my wierd shift prolem but it didnt and i never put it back in.LOL
