Default Early-Late 6th gen center console swap question

First, I'm not planning on swapping the whole thing. I've already read that it's close to impossible. (Thank you Search function). What I would like to do is relocate my CD player to the early 6th gen location below the console, behind the cup holders. Anyone ever done that? Is it as simple as getting the early 6th gen cup holder plastic part thingy (ph33r the technical terms) and rerouting the head unit wires? Is there a piece of core support to secure the thing to?

The reason I was thinking about this is because, if some of you read my other post awhile ago, my sister's Civic got broken into and they stole her junky old piece of trash deck, causing $800 in damage to the car itself, plus the cost of the audio equipment they stole. If they went to that much trouble for a worn out, broken, piece of junk deck that I couldn't pay someone to take off my hands, surely if they came back, they would see my pretty new Alpine deck and do the same. So, if it was located behind... say, a pop up lid for the cup holders where only a stock CD player would go, it would look there was nothing there worth stealing. At the same time, I could customize the center console. Having a big square hole there wouldn't be fun.

Any thoughts?

I've currently got my deck mounted in the lower pocket above the cup holder in my 96. The main thing needed is the 96-98 cup holder assembly with or with out the cd/tape player (it might also have the same brakcet for the pocket, I'm not fully sure). I aquired a new one off ebay (mine had been removed by the previous owner taking out the factory cd player), the main thing to look for is the metal brackets that extend forward from the trim surround (again I'm not sure if the pocket will work but I have a feeling it will). Once you have the bracket it's just a matter of test fitting the stereo in the bracket, the holes one the one I have were a perfect match for the side mount screw holes on my Pioneer.

The wonderful thing is the stereo harness and antenna wire are actually long enough to drap downward from it's normal location down to where the lower pocket is, all I had to do is back the wiring harness up in the dash and feed it down, with the wiring harness. adaptor it's plenty of room.

This is a picture of my dash currently and if you look below the center console you'll see my Pioneer hiding out down below, the nice part is if you don't want to pull the face you can flip up the cup holder and the face will be mostly hidden behind it.

That's exactly what I'm looking to do. I just hope it can be done on the 99-00 style.

From what I read on the other forums all you need is the 96-98 cup holder and pocket/cd player/tape player assembly, it's how I knew it could be done on mine... CLICK ME, just an idea of what you need to do, the cup holder assembly is differnt from the 96-98 to the 99-00's thus why you need a 96-98 unit..
