Default spoilers decrease gas mileage??

A friend of mine told me that having a spoiler on a car that is front wheel drive decreases the gas mileage and creates drag. The plastic spoiler I have came withw/ my 95civicwhen I bought it through a private party. He took it off and sold it as part of the car. I haven't put it back on.

If it does decrease gas mileage dramatically, by how much do you think?

If it doesn't really affect gas mileage or create drag that much or at all, should I put it back on for looks or try to sell it on eBay?

Thanks.

What kind of spoiler are you talking about? Stock or aftermarket...coupe or hatchback?

Ha, how big is the spoiler?
IMO, spoilers do not belong on civics.
They don't really help the appearance at all.

One main "noticable" change that a spoiler on the 92-95 civic (this may apply to other years too) is that it decreases road noise on highways. The spoiler diverts the turbulant air that can be noisey inside the cabin. Otherwise, for the most part, it's just for show.

Actually, spoilers are necessary for everyday driving. They create downforce which makes your car get 10 extra mpg, add 5 horsepower, and they make your car corner better as well. They work best with bodykits and 4 inch eshausts.

A spoiler is basically useless on a fwd car. All they do is add weight, which would slightly decrease gas mileage (depending on how heavy it is). They're useless on a civic.

spoilers look nice, to me the car looks so empty on the back without a factory spoiler. if you have a huge spoiler then yes its just dragging the car, but if its a stock spoiler it should be fine.

yeah, those giant park bench wings will just create unnecessary drag (not to mention they hurt your acceleration).

But do you really think honda would put a part on the car that slows it down or lowers your gas mileage? The factory wing is fine IMO... that being said, I like my empty trunk lid

lol wow this really helps me as well i was looking at buy a spoiler, for my 95 honda civic, and i do agree that they look odd with them on the back. also is it ok to put a stock spolier rather then a after market?.

why wouldn't it be? As danomatic pointed out, they reduce road noise in the cabin. Also, they aren't likely to have a negative effect on gas mileage or performance.
