find a shop that does vinyl and see if they have smoked vinyl film, this would be a simple operation as well as look alot cleaner. Another option would be the Lamin-x stuff on ebay, there are some vendors that do head and tail lights .... but I wouldnt' be suprised if you could just buy some in a sheet and cut to fit.
I just did a smoke tint spray (VHT nightshades) paint job on a friend of mines saturn sc2 and with several light coats as well as several coats of clear they came out wonderfully and look great upclose......... but this being said I'd got with vinyl because it's easier to replace/re-due when things get worn or torn (had to sand down the previous clear coats off the tails to I could re paint them and it was a messy pain).

ya i know all about sanding! i tried tinting my tail lights twice! both times looked like crap so i just sanded it all down again and then buffed it back to a shine!
and i must say i hate sanding all that junk off.LOL i just used 2K grit cause i didnt want to scare the lense so as anyone knows its a task!
guess i might just try some black paint preaty thin...

I'd go for the smoked vinyl if you've been unhappy with your paint work, it's a hell of a lot easier to remove than the paint and in the end it'll look loads better than paint ever will.
