Default Trim question for 96-00 sedan owners

My LX sedan has the chrome trim that runs around the windows on the side of my car, but I've seen other Civics without this (which I think are probably EX models). It runs along the bottom of the windows, and along the top edge of them from the side mirror back to the scalloped-shaped piece at the back of the rear doors.

Is this molding simply painted black, or is it different altogether? I haven't been able to see one up close to get a good look.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

They are different, but you can paint yours black if you would prefer.

My plan actually was to paint it black.

I was looking at it the other day, and thinking that masking it would be tricky. Everything I've found says that it seems to be adhered to the car, so I'd played with the idea of removing it to paint it. But then I got wondering if the EX had the same trim (but painted black) or if it was missing altogether on that model.

Anyway, I don't necessarily want to spend the money for the black EX ones, but if it's a matter of the factory leaving off that molding in the first place, I'm happy to do that, too.

Paint it while it's on the car. Masking tape and spare newspaper will be your best friend. That, and sandpaper.
