Also depends on what type of service it is.. DSL is a designated line, and therefore they have to give you what you pay for... if you aren't getting close to the stated speeds they have to do something to comp for it. If it is cable, that is a shared network and can be slower/faster depending on amount of people on that end of the network, the noise in the cable lines, etc. I found out that in my house I had three spliters in my cable before it hit my modem and was causing a lot of noise which ended up slowing my connection down. I re-wired it so there is only 1 splitter and it was much better..

Also, as far as limited to your ethernet card capabilities, the speeds that your cards are capable of transfering data is a lot faster than what the speeds you will see for internet. If you have a 1.5mbps connection running on a 10/100 base-t network it would be the same as if you were running on a 10/100/1000 base-t ... However, if you go wireless it can slow it down, I found that out first hand - took me a while to realize it though... I also think that the processor speed will only be a simulated slowdown.. how long it will take to load the browser, etc.. shouldn't have any effect on data transfer.. at least these are my understandings.. please correct me if I am wrong.

Mbps = megabits per second
MBps = megabytes per second

The translation is there are 8 bits in a byte. I.E. my internet connection is 16 Mbps down which translates into a max download of 2 MB/sec.

So, make sure to check the "b" cause case actually means something here. Either way you are most likely looking at DSL, it would definatly be a good idea to take a peek and see what the cable company in your area is offering for speeds because even though its not a deticated line it usually 10x faster than DSL.

Hahahaha, not quite. The cable lines have tremendous overhead to handle many users on a single line. A buddy of mine works for comcast and every once in a great while we would get to use an uncapped cable line for our LAN parties and its just stupid fast. Granted this was about 4 years ago and i imagine they have improved their lines a little bit since then. I'll tell you what if you can find a residential DSL connection that is faster than my cable i will gladly bow before you.

i am not saying anything bad about cable, except, you share with other people in you little area, so your service is slow if they all get on at the same time as you....

Not too sure where you are from, or whether this will help, but check out broadbandreports.com.. they have a breakdown of broadband connections by area and people's satisfaction with it.. also gives you a speed check too.

EDIT: on further inspection, looks like it is only for US residents.. sorry Canada/UK
