RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
what i sent to all of the email accounts of the trans. board reps in MI:
I am 27 years old, and I am, and always have been, an automotive enthusiast. I was distrubed to read in a magazine recently about H.B. 5543, which would make most aftermarket exhaust systems illegal in this state. I have aftermarket exhaust on all of my vehicles, and while it is louder than stock, it is not excessively loud. My problem with this is that this would cost tax-paying enthusiasts like myself a great deal of money to replace the exhaust system currently on their vehicles. There is someone in my neighborhood who drives a late model Chevrolet Blazer, and his stereo bass is so loud, that every time he goes past, it literally vibrates things off shelves if he sits at the stop sign in front of our house for very long. It also sets frequently off our car alarms. Also, considering that level of crime in and around the Detroit area, I feel that police have far better things to do than hassle people because their exhaust is, by their opinion, "too loud". There are potholes on I-75, as well as on roads such as Hayes, that will break an aluminum wheel at low speed. My exhaust has never harmed anyone, or damaged anyone's vehicles. Also, with no regulation of the quality of vehicles in this state, I do not see how this could even be feasible? I have seen cars driving, on public roads, that were so badly wrecked that the front fenders had been cut away, and the headlights had been broken out, so the car had make-shift headlights bolted to the underside of the crushed hood. That vehicle is clearly not safe, yet nothing is done about it, and this is not the only vehicle that I have seen in a condition similar to this. I take great pride in my vehicles, and I take very good care of them, and it concerns me that there are these motorized piles of garbage riding around on Michigan streets. Why not worry more about fixing the current tax payer problems rather than making new ones? Do everyone a favor and make the state better for tax payers by improving the road systems, not worse by enacting new, pointless laws. Thank you for your e-mail regarding HB 5543. However, because I receive so many e-mail messages, letters, and calls, I must make the people of the 108th House District my top priority. As of today this bill has not been considered in committee, but may be next week. Furthermore, I have not had an opportunity to form an opinion on this issue, but I will take your opinion into consideration while forming mine. As a member of the Transportation committee, please be assured that I do review all e-mail, letters, and phone messages on a given subject or bill before it comes up for a vote. Thank you again for your e-mail. Thank you for contacting my office regarding House Bill 5543 on the Michigan Vehicle code. I appreciate you taking the time to contact me with your concerns. As of January 11th of this year this bill was referred to the Committee on Transportation. Since I am on this committee I will make sure to take note of your email. You make many good points and I agree with you in being against this bill. It means a great deal to me that you participate in the legislative process by notifying my office of important issues. I am here to serve the best interests of my district, as well as the rest of the state, and will keep your ideas in mind when I vote. In the meantime, please feel free to contact my office toll-free at 866/MOORE-97, within the district, or 517/373-8962 if you would like to discuss this or any other issue further. |
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
md420, DJ, I'm more than down for helping and even donating.(decals!) I just got out of a meeting with my public defender, and it's amazing how they can work their magic, Patrick, did you write that letter, if so, it has many good points, and only a few grammar issue's ;)
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
yeah michigan, the home of every muscle car wants to get rid of loud exhausts. the truth is the state has no money, and a high unemployment rate so the will ticket everyone with an exhaust just for the money if it passes. since i live in michigan, i am going to write numerous letters to all of those people.

RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
that episode of the boondocks where they brought mlk back is coming to mind.

RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
Grammer is very important when your writing a formal letter or anything like that. If you have bad grammer, people will think you are unintelligent and may disregard anything you have to say. Although it may be a geeky point, it a very good one.

|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
I was just being an ass, let's get back on topic!
Like with that bill about the subwoofers.... why can't they base it on decibels?? that would make more sense |
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
agreed, but then they would make it mybe 5 above stock, to say they tried to 'compromise' with tuner's, and mxs I posted that picture in a playful way, not trying to be a smartass
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
what were my grammatical errors? i write for a living, but i was pretty pissed off when i read that...
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
I didn't catch the mistakes, i was commenting on the importance of grammer.

RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
h/o Patrick I didn't mean it like that. Lemme go back and see if I can find them, I just got home from a meeting with the Public Defender and I was tired, but I might be wrong, h/o
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
Sorry Patrick, mxs, and dj. I was so tired, I wasn't thinking right. my fault, I apoloize if I up-set anyone.
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
Patrick, I was just picking on civicboy, I didn't proofread your letter. And when I did, all I saw was that you misspelled "disturbed" (distrubed)
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
that was one of the mistakes I saw, but I thought I coulda been wrong, since no one else picked up on it...
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
considering the level of uneducation here in michigan, i probably sounded like a scholar to them...:D

RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!

RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
i couldnt think of a good word to describe the people here, so i felt that making up the word "uneducation" would be the most fitting...because it means that they get progressively less intelligent as they go along...
we live in a pretty nice area of the north-of-detroit area, and i dont know anyone who graduated from college, if they went at all...at home, i didnt know anyone my age that DIDNT go to school... its a union area...take that as you will...the biggest business around here is car production or car sales, and no offense, but you dont have to be smart to make cars, or sell cars... |

RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
My problem with such bills is mainly with motorcycles. I live on the TN/VA line and while TN is cool as **** about this stuff VA runs there state like a prison. Well I have been pulled over for having a "tip" on my exhaust, they never said it was too loud but did say it was against the law because it "amplifies" the exhaust note. Well take this into consideration......a Harley Davidson can sit at a redlight next to me with my windows up and stereo on and still ring my ears because they are so loud.
On top of that the exhaust note of most of your aftermarket exhaust are no louder than stock just different freq. ranges. It is like car audio, the reason subs get a bad name is because they produce low freq. well for anyone that knows anything about how air and sound waves move it is not that "subs" are louder it is that the lower freq. travel longer distances and are harder to stop than higher freq. Thus making the illusion that they are louder. Laws or bills like this are far to inconsistant and bias for me to stomach. |
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
...god damnit, this is going to be one of 4 formal letters I have to write today..[:@]
|
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
What the HELL!!!!!! Michigan laws can be so dumb. I have a aftermarket catback on my civic and had one on my old 300ZX and i got pulled over before in both cars because of my exhaust. Damn it, now i have to write everyone of those committee members a letter now. Im so mad, why cant they focus on something else that actually affects others like repaving roads or something. Good thing i live a mile away from indiana.

RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
ORIGINAL: Patrick ...i felt that making up the word "uneducation" would be the most fitting...because it means that they get progressively less intelligent as they go along... Good Job Patrick!!! I hate people like that...that try and take our freedoms from us...It's that Californian government mentality. :D It's understandable if you're blasting 2 12's and music w/lots of cursing or doin' 30mph in first gear in a residential area, but for daily driving? D*mn!!! Good thing I'm in ND where they are more concerned with agricultural development!!! :) |
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
I've lived on the border of Michigan and Indiana for my entire life and rightly I'm sick of the new and exciting laws/policies Michigan legislation subjects us to on a regular basis. Will they ticket out of state people for having aftermarket exhausts also? I have family in the Detroit area and I don't want to have to get pulled over for something so inconsequential.
Do you know what else grinds my gears? No Fault Insurance in Michigan. Someone can just hit you and you can't do a thing about it. Example, this girl who had just gotten her license was coming across an icy parking lot fairly quickly. Well I happen to be coming through the entrance to that parking lot at the same time. She turns the wheel but keeps sliding; she slammed into the driver's side door and scrapes all the way down the side. This in turn pushed me off the road into a sign which messed up the other side and broke my windshield. My '86 Oldsmobile Calais Supreme was in a world of hurt. I was planning on suing the pants off her for the repairs. I know what you're saying, why fix up an '86 POS. It was 1 of 25 in that color and 1 of 5 that had a leather interior and parts were getting scarce. I had always had fun in that car. And the insurance company totaled it out for $600. Oh well, I drove it until I finally blew it up and couldn't find another engine for it. Ok, all done on my rant. :) |
RE: ATTN: michigan residents!!
well i guess it will be worht dropping the extra 200 or so on an EvoII if this passes.
after i leave, im never coming back here. ever. |
