Disclaimer: I didn't do any in-depth research on this car, I'm just shooting from the hip with some basic numbers.

What the hell is the point of a turbocharged car that puts out 100 HP and 177 lb-ft of torque? The car takes 11 seconds to get to 60 mph from a stop, and gets slightly worse mileage than your average hybrid. It's slow, and I can't imagine towing anything with it because it would kill your gas mileage, which as far as I can tell is the only even moderately compelling reason to buy this car. The fact that it's a diesel engine seems irrelevant to me, but I guess they had their reasons.

I dunno. It just seems like a totally stupid car. I don't get it. At all. Anyone who has some insight into the great mystery advantage this car has, please clue me in. I would honestly like to know.

being a vw nut myself --i've owned just about every vw model made --i've had 3 or 4 diesels ---yeah sure there slow --but its the economy of it --the new tdi -is quiet & gets about 50mpg---i had 1 i modified with a custom intake , header & bossal free flow exhaust---not everybody wants to go fast

The europeans love the diesels, there is even a Hyndai 3 cylinder diesel (elantra i think). 0-60 in 20 sec flat. The advantage is suppose to be better fuel economy and there aren't that many hybrids out there. The civic and the prius are both pretty small cars, so i guess if u want a bigger car with good fuel economy you might want to buy a Jetta TDI

Not to be contradictory but I'm pretty sure the Civic and Prius are at least as big as the Jetta. I think you're thinking of the Passat.

@ AOL.COM, I understand not everyone wants to be fast, but I just can't imagine paying that much money for something that slow, and the fuel economy is marginally worse than the Prius or Civic Hybrid. I can't speak for the Civic but a friend of mine has a Prius and I think you'd find it quite impossible to build a quieter car.

I'm not trying to be a turd, I guess I'm just not a fan of "jack of all trades, master of none". If you're dropping a few grand for a beater, then sure, expectations are lowered. But I just can't see buying one new.

its just expensive because its a VW. its not a fair comparison to a hybrid honda or toyota. and with that amount of torque, they should be interesting to drive on the street. not fast, but decent, adn gets great mileage. but most peopel were buying them when diesel was 20-50 cents cheaper per gallon too. now its usually more expensive than petrol.

the diesel gets amazing fuel economy and will last forever compared to a gasoline engine, ie semi trucks usually get 500,000 miles before they are retired and the have huge v12 turbo diesels. also in europe diesel is cheaper and a lot better quality so you can get more performance from the engine, like the gti tdi a diesel gti golf that has less poer than the gas gti, but will blow its doors off in acceleration

Actually, most semis reach 1 million miles and then they are retired. 500k is a walk in the park.
