Default Car History Question: When Did Turbocharging Become Mainstream?

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question about the history of turbocharging in cars. We all know that turbochargers were initially used in motorsport and high-performance vehicles, but when did turbocharging start becoming more mainstream in production cars?

I’m curious about which manufacturers and models first popularized the technology for everyday drivers, and how it evolved over the years. Did it start in the 80s with the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo, or were there earlier examples I might have missed?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
