Default diesel jetta

Does anyone know or have experience with the older jetta tdi models? Im looking into picking up a 1993 jetta diesel for long commute duty. I need its excellent mpg and diesel fuel cost because starting in July I will be traveling back and forth from the city where my apartment is to the city where I work which is about 800km away. (this is on a work shift of say 5 days on, 5days off) How reliable are these jettas? Ive looked for info and have seen mostly good things about this year model. My civic is ok but not the best on a long distance travel and I dont like putting the miles on her

i've owned a few vw diesels years ago , good , reliable , cars , but slow , the only car that you can keep the gas padel to the floor & not get a speeding ticket or blow up the motor
just make sure its got good glow plugs, injectors & timing belt

Whats wrong with not commuting with the car? People seem to think its ok to put gull wing doors with 18inch wheels on or use it for drag duty. my civic is going to be transformed into a weekend warrior/summer onlycar done up very nicely....or sold.My civic has no ac, and I have not seen many rust free eg hatches around here, so I kind of want to keep it in decent shape. Thanks for the info on the tdi though aol ill take a look at the next time im in the city.

Holy shiet man, you first wanted a 240, a rustang, then now a TDI. (stay away from the TDI) they're good engines, and get excellent mileage. But when something goes wrong, LOL good luck finding cheaper parts for it. If you want a GOOD commuter car, go for a early 90's toyota corolla. My neighbour had one, a 93 automatic. He drove it to 1.1 million kms without an engine rebuild, and it started every day of the year (even at -50). Damn reliable. He sold it this year, and bought a 98 or 99 and the wierd thing is, his new one wouldnt start at -45. He wants his old one back... haha

Even celicas are reliable, but I havent heard of them going as far as corollas or toyota pickup trucks. 4runner or toyota pickups are excellent, no matter what engines are in them. They're builtsolid.

Well I was actually just testing the waters as I said in the first post with the 240 and getting your guy's opinions. Im not going to settle for the first car I see, lol. Ive got my head screwed on straight now, Im looking at getting a commuter vehicle that needs to be reliable. The civic just won't cut it for the highway I will be on, and where I work trucks rule the road. I like those toyota pick-ups but they are a little $$ for some of them. I just can't decide if I keep the civic or find a faster car . Ive been looking for a while for a proper ac for my civic but can't find anything helpful[:@]and having no ac suks. Ill let you guys no what happens instead of filling up the threads, lol

i read a post on vwvortex (im a member unfortunately) of a guy who had an earlier version TDI. his is above 200k miles and still running strong...
replacement parts are expensive. my clutch assembly for example was around 300 bux minus labor.

but it gets like 50 mpg so totally go for it dude.

yeah diesel is usually cheaper...when gas is expensive diesel is cheap, when gas is cheap diesel is expensive. lol. and gas isnt going to go down so diesel will be cheap!

but yeah id go for it. i have a jetta and its great, no real problems except the expensive clutch.

and a vr6 is really nice...even if it does only get 27 mpg.
but for a DD a TDI is a good idea.
in fact, heres a review of a guy who has one.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3580923
seems to like it.

thanks ill take a look at that review. When used to be in highschool 2 years ago I had a buddy that used to drive an old jetta diesel. That thing had 342 000km on it and we used to haul around 4 people in it at lunch, fun little car and it just sounds cool (being diesel)
