The economy sucks
It seems with the slowdown of the U.S. economy, Canada's has/is being affected slowly as well. I was terminated/layed off from a millwright apprentice position in September, and I have yet to find work in this field again (there is basically nothing available except for Jouneymen) which is really getting me down somewhat, Ive been out of work for 2 months now (millwright work) and have been part-timing at pizza hut lol the wage here is around 14/15 so its not bad delivering but has anyone else been affected directly such as your job or getting out of school and not finding work easily and what do you plan to do? I really want to work as a millwright but if I can't find another apprentice job Im going to go to school for automotive technician pre-employment course and challenge the 1st year exam and go from there. I also just put an application into Mr.Lube lol.
Yeah, That's why I plan staying in school for the rest of my life so I don't have to come to terms with the "real work force", lol. But yes, it's getting hard out there. And people usually don't stop to think about how the U.s. ecomony effects EVERYONE.
My company just laid off 3% of our workforce and another 4% coming up in Q1'09. Most peoples 401Ks are way down and it's tough to make money in the stock market these days. That translates into nobody feeling especially wealthy which means this is going to be among the leanest Christmas' I can remember and that also translates into an economic downward spiral. I'm contributing to this by suggesting to my family that we only by gifts for the little kids and not worry about the adults in the family.
It's a tough time to be unemployed and I may be joining the unemployed at the beginning of the year.
On a brighter note, I am using this weakness as a buying opportunity in the stock market. Companies that were trading at $50 just a year ago are less than $1 today. If my plan works, I'll be fairly well off in 10 years. If it doesn't, I'm out a few thousand bucks.

Yeah, it's tough times and likely to get worse. Many will find themselves in a similar situation. Best of luck to you holding onto your job and to megafandrew finding a new one.
Thanks alot RonJ, thankfully the economy is still going strong here somewhat (it is the strongest province to be living in right now) and I hope you guys stay safe with your jobs or have luck and don't lose what you are doing now, ej6 lol that is a good idea, Im thinking of going to school like Chris (reaper) so I can mabey study automotive technician pre-employment and also draw EI every month while doing it. If I dont have a good job (doesn't necessarily have to be millwright that would be nice tho) by January I am going back to school. I am thankful my Dad has an excellent job in the oil industry and allows me to rent at home for reasonable money or I do alot of fix-ups, yard work around the house for him. Also Clutch I would follow threw with that plan just research the companies, you will be better off if it picks up (which it will) in a few years, I may start doing this too And just so you guys know, many people here (Canada) are well aware of the situations in the USA I wish your country good luck and hopefully Obama can do some good things!
You could move to saskatchewan. Everything is still going really strong here in saskatoon. I haven't heard of ANY lay offs. I've was offered another job today as well and I accepted. I work in cabinetry, and people keep ordering kitchens for brand new houses. So lots of new houses = lots of jobs for everyone. I'm being asked to work overtime too because we have so much work to do and not enough employees. Everyone in saskatoon is short workers. Its crazy. We need another... 5 people (plant has about 50 people) and we'll be set.
im doing the same thing
