Default Exhaust Vs Cam

So there is this guy i know that got a new exhaust on his evo, paid $1000 installed. The shop where he had it done (AMS) pretty much said that the exhaust was a better mod than new cams and a tune. The minute i heard that i thought that these guys must be on crack. What do you guys think?

On a factory turbo'd car like the EVO a better exhaust is a must before any other mods really. It free's up a good 20 to 30hp plus makes way for much better gains with other mods. I would say they are right on this as better cams and a tune will be a waste when you have to re-tune for the exhaust later.

I would think that somethign like Stage II cams would give you more power over an exhaust, a $1000 exhaust at that.

There will be no point in getting a set of stg 2 cams when your exhaust is not up to the task of exiting all the exhaust gas's in a performance oriented manner. These things are done in steps you got to go in order to insue the major type mods are supported by all other things. You have to clear the air ways before you can make more air go through them. He would have seen a gain with the cams no doubt but nowhere near the gain he would see with the same cams if he has the exhaust.

The guys is saying that he has 324 AWHP with the exhaust and BOV. That would be the same as 390 crank power (103HP increase). Needless to say i don't believe him for a second. I think that $1000 for an exhaust is way too much, i could prolly make my own out of 4" exhaust tubing and a mig welder for alot less.

Boosted cars are crazy with bolt-ons, an exhaust, i/c upgrade, and tuning will get you alot of power. I watched a show about 4 years ago where they had a 1st gen Eclipse GS-T. They added and exhaust, after market air intake, up'd the boost around 4psi, and tuned. They started with 185whp in stock form and ended at around 298whp,

Like I said above boosted cars are totally different. I dont see 324 AWHP from an exhaust and BOV alone but I do see 324AWHP from an exhaust, BOV, WG, upped boost, and a tune.

I saw a dyno test on an Eclipse that got 28Hp from just a downpipe. Cams' gains come from higher lift and longer duration, and with that comes overlap (usually), and that's a bad thing in FI cars.

I was using my stock exhaust for awhile with my turbo setup...........then I slapped on a magnaflow WITH the cat, and you could feel the gain............wait till I get my exhaust cutout welded in (this week time willing)...........ill be able to go open dp.........which is goin to give a nice gain.

I guess performance for FI cars and NA cars is way different.
