Okay, so my cable modem died today, like its DONE. So our 4 computers have no internet connection (We use wireless connections) Well i turned on my comp tonite and BAM i have internet......but my modem isnt even hooked up? Im guessing a neighbor has wireless internet as well? Well thanks guys.........maybe well cancle internet service.

 

yeah a bunch of ppl around here are all working off of one wireless modem. like i have the modem in my basement (its a walk out in the back so its not like completely surrounded in concrete) and i have a wireless rouder hooked into a wireless router, one picks up the signal from the basement, the other transmits it to my computer and out to their computers. then they have the same setup, a router to a router, to take the signal from my transmitting router and put it through another one to their computer. and someone over the street uses it every once in a while over a laptop.

we all pay for the internet. so we're not technically stealing it. its just four houses on one network

 

that would be a good way to steal tho...but it would be kind of a pain probably to find the right location so it gets a good connection

 

One of my friends did this as part of a project for school:

1. took his laptop in his car with wireless modem.
2. drove around the area where my campus is
3. graphed and polled the number of houses he could connect to the internet from

There were about 30 houses in a 20 mile radius that were giving out free internet access.

My city is going free in a couple of days.

 

i get it at school with my psp. and our router at home is in the basement with concrete on all sides so it doesnt transmit out of the house very well

 

not really. i set up two routers in my grandparents main beach house when i was in SC to steal from their neighbors. not that hard.
