Regarding me, yes, lol is necessary. A lot of my joking with people I know fairly well would be interpreted as me being the biggest douche in the world by people that don't know my sense of humor if I didn't tack lol to the end of it. Basically, all the new members would immediately consider me a giant jacka** if I didn't use it to indicate I'm not being serious.

Or maybe I should just add a picture of the Dark Knight's joker to all my posts with the caption "Why so serious?"
