something i have learned is all that spywear stuff makes your computer slower. its a constant running program so its always using ram. but i have never had any virus problemos. every blue moon i knotice a strange file on my hd. knowing that might be a viruse, just delete it.

If you are using Internet Explorer, stop, switch over to Firefox, at the moment no one(extremely small percentage) is coding spyware or viruses for Firefox, also get yourself a GOOD firewall, like Norton or TrendMicro, DONT use Microsofts firewall if you don't have to, and for those dsl and cable people get a router w/ a hardware firewall. Don't forget to update your firmware on your hardware firewalls and make sure you have automatic updates on your software firewall. Search google for most spoofed IP address and block those, also block all RESERVED IP address, Telnet connections(unless you use it).
