That's why the traditional firehouse dog is the Dalmation, because dalmations were originally coach dogs. They were bred to be able to trot alongside a horse cart for hours on end, protecting it from robbers, predators, etc. That's why dalmations make bad pets because they're extremely high energy dogs, prone to bighting out of frustration if they're not exercised properly.
