Well not necessarily. Most sport oriented cars are rear wheel drive. While all wheel drive does allow you to hook up off the line better (logically easy to grasp), it adds lots of weight to the drivetrain. This extra traction is especially helpful in snow as forementioned. The handling characteristics are different...but i wouldn't say better than rear wheel drive (of course depends on specific car)
