Unhappy speeding ticket question

Hi guys,

Disclaimer: I know I broke the law and I'm very sorry and I won't do it again. I admit my mistake and apologize to the world for endangering its citizens.

Ok, so I got caught doing 93 on a highway, so thats 65 mph speed limit. I was also changing lanes at the same time, and there were some cars sorta far ahead of me, so I got a careless driving ticket also.

The speeding is going to cost me an arm and a leg b/c its double fines in 65 zone + 4 points on my insurance. And I'm 20 yrs old, so thats not going to be good for my premiums =( =( =(.

I was talking to a friend at work and he said if I went to court they would drop the 2 point careless driving ticket. And that if I got my speedo checked and got documentation saying that it was malfunctioning, then that would be enough defense to get me out of my speeding ticket. This guy is in his 50s and has lived a very rough life (drug dealer at a young age, gun shot wounds, etc, knows how to deal w/ cops. Hes really cool now, works as a full time lifeguard) so I sort of trust his judgment.

But I wanted confirmation on this - will they drop the ticket if I show them my speedo is off? It IS off! by 3 miles an hour. So I CAN get the documentation.

Please let me know what your experience has been.

Thanks.

no matter what go to court. you never know what can happened there. you may get some charges dropped or drop some of those penalty payment. i doubt they will drop your ticket altogether if your speedo is just off by 3 mph since you were caught going 93 in a 65 that is like 28mph over the speed limit. i dont know about your state but in california you can attend traffic school and get a point taken off the record

So what if your speedo was off, you were still doing 90 instead of 93? big deal. It's not off that bad that you wouldn't be able to tell you were going over the speed limit. You were caught so deal with the consequence so you'll now learn from your actions.

I'll 100% guarantee they won't drop the charges.

Yeah, sorry bud, the faulty instruments will not fly at that speed. My speedo was reading 0 and I was apparently going 78 in a 65. BUT, I was going with the flow of traffic as my speedo was BROKEN, not just reading 3 off. So, I'm thinkin' that you're out of luck as far as that goes. Just show up to the hearing.

I really do not think that they will drop the entire speeding ticket, but you might be able to get some of the charges dropped and or get them reduced in punishment. Like someone said above me, you should always go to court cuz you never kno what could happen anything might. Good luck

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your replies.

My lifeguard friend said that it doesnt matter how much it is off, just showing that it is off is enough legal defense to get out of the points. I wonder if this was his experience in some random court and isnt universal... =(
I'm praying that it gets me out of it though!

And I live in New Jersey, which is apparently ranked #1 worst place for traffic violations.

Yes, I will still be going to court - the date is on july 28th, so its a while away. Maybe I'll update this thread after.

Thanks again

well i know here in indianapolis ive heard the judge is a complete @ss to everyone that tries to fight the tickets and charges them more!

i highly doubt youll get outta anything. and try not to go that fast anymore....
i know i do ruffly 90mph every now and then early in the morning when traffic is very low at about 5:30am but luckely i havent been busted yet, but then again i dont do it that often. sometimes im just rolling and dont realize it since no other traffic to pass. if you have traffic you can easily tell when your speeding to much by flying around them pretty fast.lol

luckily ive been able to keep ticket free for quite a long time now surprisingly even to myself! knock on wood >>>

IMO speeding isnt a bad forum basher... IMO if your street racing someone THEN let the bashing come hard.
dont feel to bad... good luck in court but dont get your hopes up to much...

what everyone else said the chances of you getting the ticket dismissed are very slim. they will just say " if you knew the speedo was off why didnt you fix it" you're ****ed. take it from me.

NJ Driver

4 tickets
2 speeding
1 license suspension

you're not getting out of this just bend over and take it like a man.
