tiptrionic
tiptronic.....ok for thos who dnt know what im talking about, its an A/T with an auto stick that you control shifting with, kinda like a manual without a clutch. anywho...
im a HUGE A/T hater and was never really happy with the autostick(the few times iv drivin one). but recent searchings for my A4 have come up wth a VERY nice A4 1.8 quattro. but its got tiptronic.
now i still plan on the k04 turbo upgrade and chipping and such...
so my ? is for people with autostick experience...
should i hold out for a possible 5speed in probably worse condition or get this one with the autostick??
if i needed to race someone...how bad would the shift lag be with the autostick???
please put input asap.

it varies greatly from brand to brand with the autostick. some autosticks have a manual over ride, and once you get near the rev limiter, it shifts by itself. mine does not. it will not shift until i tell it to, and it will bounce off the limiter all day if you want. some of them shift sort of hard in manual mode compared to auto mode, like mine. for instance, on damp ground, with only 215ish hp, my car will break traction going into 2nd gear with the autostick. i really like mine, but i wish that it was a manual.
You will hate it, I promise. My friends uncle had an A6 4.2 and the tiptronic blew. When you hit up or down it doesn't make it shift, it "gives it permission" to shift to that gear when it wants to. It was more fun/easier to use in straight up auto mode. The only tiptronic you should ever buy is a Ferrari F1, which is really a manual tranny shifted for you in two tenths of a second.
Well if i get a tiptronic youll be happy at first, and down the line youll realize your losing 30% of power due to powertrain as opposed to 15%. Besides, if u push SERIOUS power u can upgrade the clutch cheap. Yea i was going to get my auto built to take like 250 hp, and the friggen torque converter (High stall) is almost as much as a fricken 5 speed swap)........GET THE 5 SPEED.
Ive always figured that manuals were better then sticks because fo the clutch, you can use it to rev match and you can slip it to keep RPMs up while launching. I dont really think the actuall shifting varies much between autostick and real stick. Save for a turbo auto, you wont have to respool between shifts cause the throttle plate never closes.
