I used to work with a kid who had an 02 Roush Mustang. It was only the stage 2, but he thought it was like the greatest car in the world..(at the time). One day I was leaving my friends house to go to work, and he lived on the other side of town so I had to take a different way.. When I was trying to get to my work, the street was blocked off, and I could see a white Civic on its side wrapped around a tree. Anyway, I kept going to work, and was just casually chatting with the guy. Then a couple minutes later the police come and take him to our breakroom. He raced the kids on his way to work, and 2 of the kids in the Civic died. The guy I know didnt end up getting in trouble for anything, but I bet he felt horrible for that. Even if its not you who gets hurt, if someone does, and you were the one racing them, think about how that might make you feel.

Im not gonna act like Im innocent from any racing on the streets, but I kinda pick my battles. If ppl want to race me in situations that are clearly unsafe, I go extra slow to let them know Im not racing.. Ive seen a lot of my friends crash their cars.. And unfortunately a couple have passed away.

while i am sure that it is a terrible thing, i shed no tears for people who are involved in street racing, and kill themselves. now, for innocent bystandars, like that mess in LA where two idiots slammed into a hospital wing and hurt a bunch of people, yes, that sucks...

but every time someone engagaes in a race it has to be assumed that traveling at high speed, whether on a closed circuit or on the open road, there is the chance of severe injury and/or death...as bad as it sounds, its a part of racing....a few years back there was a kid racing in "a sport compact" which turned out to be an srt4 on a very twisty back road with one of his buddies in a car that wasnt identified. this road is very twisty, with alot of 90+ degree turns...the kid lost it, went off the road, and slammed into a parked truck...killing him. my aunt was going on about it, and since i have done my fair share of street racing (when younger) i looked into who it was...turns out, i didnt know the kid, but i knew of him..he was 18, and in his 2 years of driving, he had several arrests for street racing, and had already totaled 3 other cars in the process, one of which paralyzed one of his friends who was in the car. he license had been revoked, but his parents bought him yet another quick car..and he finally did society a favor and offed himself, making the streets safer for everyone...

this, is not sad. this kid obviously was a terrible driver who was the fast and the furious too many times, and no matter how many times he wrecked, he was a "devout street racer"...he was one who would pull out comments like "the track is for bitches"...when in reality, people who are "Devout street racers" are the ones who arent good enough drivers to hang with real racers...

as long as there have been cars, there has been street racing, and it will always exist. i have made over a thousand drag strip runs in my days, and ive probably made damn half that many 100+ plus "quarter mile street runs" without incident...and while i was much younger, and keep it on the track now, its all racing, and a part of racing is wrecking...and so on and so forth...

when no innocent people are involved...street racing wrecks, if anything, are Good because maybe the person will learn something..but like the kid with the SRT4...he who does not learn from the past...is doomed to repeat it...

maybe I should only go 110 on the straight a ways.
the guy in the mustang wasnt going anywhere near that speed. and thats the kin dof thinking that got him in the situation.

I have to agree with you, Pat. People need to take a look at their behavior and determine whether it's gonna get someone hurt. Talking/reading more about this kid, everyone agrees that he was an accident waiting to happen. He was one of the guys who does 80mph through the parking lot at the "meets" and sped everywhere to try to show off.

I was actually in a pretty bad wreck a long time ago becasue of this kind of stupidity. It was a 5thgen hatch (didnt' know it at the time) and the guy was trying to show off. He passed a car in the tunnel between Alameda and Oakland and lost control. We slammed into the concrete wall and I put my head through the windshield. I was bleeding pretty badly from the head and my buddy in the back was screaming bloody murder because he had messed his leg up real good. This friggin *** clown gets out and starts bitchin about his rims while Eric and I were stuck in the car. HE was the only one wearing his seatbelt. He never did apologize for that.

I almost never drive w/o my seat belt. I usually put my belt on automatically, without even thinking about it.
