theres no correction in jail...people have to become bigger and better criminals in jail just to survive. I'm by no means a criminal, but if i ever somehow got put in jail for a long time, im pretty sure i would just join a prison gang because it seems to be the best way to stay safe.

I think you are right. And that's why I frankly don't see a point in discussing how many years they will spend behind the fence. Be it 10, 20 or 30, it will be enough to convert those guys into professional criminals. Since in reality there is no correction involved, things at hand are revenge and isolation. And only death or life imprisonment will satisfy those...

i don't know what they do in russia at that age when you're bored...

but when i was 15, my friends and i didn't go around beating on homeless people when we were bored... we went to the local court and played some hoops... or some football at the local park... or did something of that nature....

and i grew up living in a rough neighborhood
Being probably the only russian posting on this thread, I'm trying to figure out what this should mean? I did not think any of the killers or victims were russian. Or I'm wrong? And this stuff happened in Russia?

Again, if we were judging this from eye for an eye point of view (if you don't like r-word), the only feasible answer would be death sentence…
The death sentance would fit the crime, but it seems that in country the crime has to really bad before someone gets the death penalty. Also, minors are not given the death sentance i think.

Yeah, I also think minors can't be sentenced to death in many countries. I was not advocating the death sentence, though, I was trying to make a point that there is no real difference between 15 or 22 years or whatever other number one picks here. Either number is not going to satisfy any of the possible punishment goals....

True...depending on where you're locked up. I come from a family heavily revolved around law enforcement, and my dad is actually climbing the ladder to become a prison Warden. He says that for the most part, criminals with slightly longer sentences usually come out just fine. Typically they gain about 30-60 pounds of muscle, but that'll happen when you can work out all day, and have to avoid that guy who's trying to stab you. The guy doing the stabbing is usually only in for <5 years or so, and trying to make a name for himself. Correctional facilities, at least up where he works are doing a damn fine job at accomplishing the main task...correction. It's all about keeping inmates busy with structured activities. It's the prisons that are nothing but cells and showers that aren't getting the job done.

At my dad's facility, inmates can play any sport that people on the outside can. Hell, they even make an outdoor ice rink in the winter so that they can play hockey, and guess what, no one has EVER been stabbed with an ice skate. Why? Because no one wants to ruin the fact that they can go out and get some decent excersize. The even bring in the Soo Greyhounds once a year to play against the inmate team.

Now, I'm fully expecting the onslaught of arguements saying "**** that, they're in prison they don't deserve that crap, blah blah blah.." Fact of the matter is, you can either lock someone up in a room for ten years, and let them plot their next move as soon as they get out. Or you can keep them busy, teach them new skills, and give them an outlook on life that shows what they are really missing on the outside. It's those inmates that come out with a new view on life in general, and typically do what they can to be a rule abiding part of society.
