Default 1985 Monte Carlo SS, auto tranny

O.K. i know its not a civic. my dad owns a monte ss, its his baby. probably put 2,000 kms on it this year. so he backs it out of his garage. and now it wont shift out of reverse. so its just sitting in the driveway. at this point, he just wants to get it into neutral to push it back into the garage. he says its probably just the cable but i dont think so.

anyone have any ideas??

It can be the cable. Just shut off the engine and see if you can push it. Does it go into Park and stop the car from rolling?

As gwl mentioned, with the engine off, an automatic transmission will drop out of gear and the car can safely be pushed forward (In any setting except Park, it will just roll like it is in neutral). Once it is back in the garage, jack it up and check the linkage at the transmission.
