Unhappy 1996 EX overheating HELP!

I have a 1996 Civic EX that overheats. Drove the car 250 miles 2 weeks ago when purchased, had front axle bearing changed, front pads and rotors. When I picked it up and drove less than 3 miles (last part of 3 miles was decent accel to merge interstate on incline) it overheated-low coolant when I was able to get over and check. Checked the oil, no milky sign of coolant intrusion. No indication of oil in coolant, no coolant bubling in radiator after adding. No overheat at idle and low speed, but less than a mile on the highway and the temp climbs-appears to be blowing coolant out thru cap to overflow in large amounts causing the car to overheat. Electric fans do not come on but not sure if they would do much to prevent high speed overheat. Not sure if there are 2 temp senders or 1 for fans....any help would be much appreciated. Not a tech dummy here but haven't turned wrenches in a while.
Thank you!
