Default 1997 Honda Civic EX Troubles

I have a 97 Honda Civic Ex and this morning I heard a wining sound and then the battery light came on and had no power steering.

The car would restart fine. 2 belts (or 1) on driver side was not turning.

Help

Check the alternator belt. If that's fine, the alternator may have failed.

The crank pulley may have come loose. Usually though it falls all the way off and the pulley lands on the road. Check that the crank pulley is securely bolted on. Do not drive any more while it is loose because you risk messing up the timing belt.

That was my next question. Belt is in tack. There is a pulley that is loose and looks as if it is going to fall off. I am assuming this is bad.

I haven't had the opportunity to look at this closely. Everything that I am reading about concerning crankshaft bolts is that they are a bear to get off. So how is it that mine just came loose? I can't imagine a bolt that strong breaking, especially with what people are doing to them just to get them loose.

Is this something I can do, as a novice, or should I take it to a shop.

Whoever did it last probably didn't tighten it enough. As you found out, the bolt is very tight for a reason.
