Default 1999 Civic LX D16Y7 timing belt.

I just turned 100K on my 1999 LX with the original timing belt, or chain. I was going to change it, but then the dealership told me that it was a timing chain and that 99's don't use timing belts anymore.

Well, I popped the timing belt cover and that "chain" looks pretty rubbery to me, so I want to replace it. I also know that 96-00 Civics were the same generation, so why the crap would they change the belt in the middle of nowhere? Also, I don't ever recall Civics using timing chains until just now, like 06 Civics.

Tell me if I'm right or wrong, I don't know about dealers anymore. Thanks.

good heavens. wonder what about are you. dont want to get close to that dealership (just kidding).

guess it was a service writer. maybe just a newby.

but, i did not know that an 06 has a chain. that does not make sense. they went to belts because the long run of the overhead cam was too long for a chain. but then, i am not too much up on the new tech.

bout the max i would run on a timing belt. found this last night (see my post):

get the timing belt and water pump changed. If you snap the belt your valves are DONE.

Got the car new 7 years ago, but I didn't know a thing about cars back then. All I knew is that is was a Honda, and Hondas were good cars.
