You have a good chance of fixing the problem by cleaning the IACV on the throttle body. The diagram shows you where the IACV is located and how it looks:

Hey Ron thanks for the picture.
I now have the IAC out of the car, do I just clean the two ports on the back of the IAC or do I have to disassemble the valve to get it good and clean? I tried to reference the DIY about cleaning it but mine doesnt have the screen or round ports so I'm just curious if there is a specific part that I need to clean.
Thanks again

You don't need to disassemble the IACV. Just thoroughly clean the channel where air bypasses to the intake manifold with carburetor cleaner. The channel is likely covered with soot that may impede proper movement of the window that controls air flow.

Where is that window supposed to be when at rest? Mine seems to be about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way closed. Is it supposed to be closed all the way or not at all?
It was covered in a fair amount of soot... hope it does the trick.

I don't remember where the window sits when the IACV is disconnected. If it is very dirty, you might want also to replace the PCV valve and consider a Seafoam treatment (see forum DIY).

Thanks for all the info... that must have been the problem because my idle is back. It doesn't seem to drop to a dying idle and sits right where it should.
How long does a cleaning get you before you have to do it again? Will this eventually lead to the replacement of the IACV?
My Chevy Vortec is nortorious for clogging the EGR. I got away with cleaning it 7 or 8 times before it just wouldn't help and I was forced to purchase a new one.

Thanks again Ron

Glad to hear you found the fix. Replacing the PCV valve and using synthetic oil will greatly extend cleaning times. Under these conditions, you might never need to clean it again. You won't likely need to replace the IACV, unless it possibly throws a CEL code.

I was kind of surprised at first that it didn't throw a code for the IACV.
So do you think that I had two seperate problems or was one causing the other?
Thanks again for the help it made my day!
