Question 2000 Honda Civic LX

Hello everyone. I am new here. I have a 2000 Honda Civic LX and I am having a few problems.

1. Check engine light is on constantly, but blinks when the car is accelerated.

2. Too much gas consumption. My car eats way too much gas.

3. When pressing on the gas pedal (sp?), I can hear a loud "popping" noise underneath the car.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my car and how much will it cost to repair? Because of these problems, I am having a hard time passing my emissions test and obtaining an up-to-date registration.

Thank you,
HondaCivicGirl2010

HondaGirl,

First off, welcome to the forum. Secondly, you need to go to an autoparts store and the clerk to help you read the codes off the check engine light. It will give you a good start in terms of finding out what is wrong with your car.

The "popping" sound is probably one or more of your cylinders misfiring. So start with getting the engine light codes and post back.

P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0300 Random Misfire Detected

Sounds like you may need a tune up if you have not had one.

HondaGirl, there could be a number of issues. One thread I read said that it could be a timing problem. Do you know if the timing belt was replaced recently?

No, I am not sure about that. I've had the car since 2006, so I don't really know what kind of work was done to it by the previous owner.

I would start with spark plugs and wires. Make sure plugs are properly gapped. (You'll probably see the little round spark plug gap tool at the counter at your local auto parts store.)

What kind of mileage does it have? It's possible that the timing belt jumped a tooth, but it's also possible that the ignition system (distributor, plugs, wires) is old and worn out.
