Default tranny does not shift

Check-engine light came on. The mechanic read the code. The code says that the gear does not shift to the highest. The mechanic said
- rpm will go up by 500 when gear does not shift; lose some mpg
- I wont notice the failure to shift
- just drive as if nothing happened
Do you think the aboves are correct assessment?

Thanks!

Took to trans specialist. They tried really hard to duplicate the problem. Could not. Checked electrical of the tranny box - no problem. They said trans slip can happen all the time (uphill, downhill, sudden change in torque), and suspected that I might have been a peculiar driving condition.
