Default 2005 civic fuel problems?

Hey I have a 2005 Honda civic lx 1.7litre 2 door coupe and I am problems figuring out what is going on the car starts and runs fine but when I hit between 3000 and 4000 thousand rpm it craps out I have changed the plugs with no luck now I'm leaning toward fuel problem thinking the fuel filter just bought the car and haven't changed it since I have owned it does anyone know if I'm the right track or if there is another common problem that I am missing
Any help would be greatly appreciated also the engine light came on but did not give a code cleared the engine light and now it is back on

If the light is on there is a code. A common reason to refuse to go higher than 3000 rpm is that the timing belt has skipped a tooth.
