Default 87 Honda Civic Hatchback

I am about to buy an 87 Honda Civic Hatchback with only about 100K miles for a low price. The owner is honest and says it recently failed the California smog test.

The engine compression is good. It doesn't smoke. Everything appears fine. What could be causing it to fail the California smog test. Could it be the Catalytic converter ? Or something more simple ? How expensive is that to replace ?

thanks ,
David

Has it had the 100K mile service? Be sure your filters (air and fuel) are good. Also check your plugs and wires to be sure your getting a good fuel burn (distributer to). Timing could be an issue also. A factory cat may be pricey but you might be able to get a good aftermarket piece on ebay.
