First check is to make sure the cam and distributor rotates when you crank. If not the timing belt is bad. This will of course cause no start as well as no spark. Easiest way to check is to take the oil cap off and look in at the valve rockers, which should rock.

Check that power is reaching the distributor. It should have battery voltage on the larger wire in the plug with 2 wires both with the key "on" and while cranking.

If you have a "check engine" light on the dash (not sure if the '89 does, though later 4th generations do) it should come on and go out when you click the key "on" but don't start. This proves that the computer is powering up and running to some degree.

You say then that it did start once, then died?

Check for loose wires, especially the ground wires on the thermostat housing. The whole computer system grounds there.

Make sure you have the plastic plate in place under the distributor rotor; without it sparks can jump down into the low-voltage parts in the bottom of the distributor and burn things out.
