91 civic si speedo cable help ?
hi i have a 91 civic si hatchback 1.6 and im having problems with my speedo cable
i just purchased the car about 3 days ago and the guy told me he had to replace the cluster because it was damaged not a big deal the new one looks nice , everything works on it like the lights the rpm's and all that good stuff but the speedometer and the miles are not working so i took it aparts and took a look the speedo cable is there and hooked up so i went into the engine comp. and notice that the other half coming thru the firewall is not hooked up at all
everyone says it goes to the transmission but where and how ? where it coomes out it sits at a 45 degree angle and is only about 1 foot long maybe a touch longer is doesnt seem like it would even reach there
and where on the transmission because im new to this and dont see a spot to where it would go or im looking in the wrong spot ?
also is it hard to but back into the transmission or does it just pop back in and rubber grommet holds it ?
that is what is not making my speed and miles work correct ?
any help would be greatly appreciated also pictures would help me a lot also , thank you and hope to here from you soon

There should be a fitting on the top of the transmission near the back, on the part that extends back where the CV axles go in. It looks like a pipe about an inch high and 1/2 inch in diameter. The cable just pushes in there. There is a spring clip that fits into a slot on the side of the fitting to hold the cable in. Then the rubber boot slides down the cable to cover everything up.

thankx for the info i did finally see where it goes with the help from you , but still having same problem i pulled back the rubber grommet and exposed the wire cable inside it stuck in down in the whole tried to turn it by hand and it wouldnt turn so i assumed that it went in and i put the rubber grommet over it all , about the spring clip thing right on the whole i didnt see one unless you are speaking of a while type plastic clip that looks c shaped up a little bit from where it plugs in , the casing of the cable is secured by it clip ? other than that no other clip
my speedo and odometer still dont work but lights on dash turn signals warning lights rpm's everything works but the speedo and odometer
any other suggestion's ? did i do it right ? did i plug it into the right spot ? right near the cv shaft passenger side on top of trans. about a inch high and sharpie marker diam. right ?
still need some help , hope you guys and gals can help me out more here
thank you again in advance

Sounds like you're missing the metal clip. The plastic clip just holds the cable to the motor mount. But it should still work though as long as it stays fully inserted.
You should pull the center part of the cable out and make sure it is not broken. It should be long enough to reach all the way to the cluster and have the far end cut down square to engage the speedometer. They often break where the cable makes the sharp turn to go thru the firewall.

i did double check everything a little while ago like you said i pulled it back out and pull the inner part os the cable out of the sleeve and the one end going into the speedo is squared off like you said and the other end looks like a bigger end attached to the cable its self with like a notch in it
so i can gaurantee that it is not broken , so i put it back in and still nothing , and yes i just have the plastic clip on the motor mount not the other clip but it is staying in the hole on the trans. though
is that part really needed to make it work or not ?
i wanna say that i also heard that when you insert it into the trans you are suppose to move the car a little bit while the other person puts the cable into the spot ,
is that true ? and if so which way do you move in forwards or reverse ? will you actaully feel the trans grab a hold of it and turn it or not ?
wanna say when i put it back in today i rolled the car in reverse will doing it then tried to turn it by hand (the cable itself ) and i couldnt get it to turn , in wrong or what ?
could it be that because i dont know how long it was not in the hole that something like water or something else got in there and rusted it up ? if so what can i do to resolve this issue ?
i cant see buying a new cable as to there isnt anything wrong with this one besides the missing clip on the hole .
but i did order that clip from a honda dealer today $6.29 ill have it by tuesday this week
so if you can please read thru my questions and give me more insite on this again , thank you again in advance.

If you don't have the cable all the way in so the tab on the side of the end piece engages the shaft in the transmission piece, it won't work. This is easy to tell when you have the metal clip because once it is all the way in, the clip will lock it and it can't be pulled out. Note the slot on the transmission piece and the groove just above the tapered piece on the outer part. When fully engaged these will be occupied by the metal clip. Hold it against the outside and mark the position of how far in it should go. Try turning the end shaft piece about 90 degrees at a time and re-insert until it goes in to the full position.
You could also test the speedo by spinning the end of the cable with an electric drill. Try both directions.
