91 DX Hatch sputtering (intermediatly)
Hey everyone,
About a year ago I bought a 91 ex with a d15 in it. I live in the mountains of North Carolina so there is a constant elevation change on my way to and from work, and I noticed that every once in a while when I let the motor hold me back, as opposed to overusing the brakes, when I began to accelerate again the engine would sputter like it was flooded, but if you take your foot off of the gas and then reapply it, it would clear out and drive normally. I replaced my fuel filter and nothing changed. Soon after that motor threw a rod and caught on fire. I dropped the d15 and did a single cam zc motor. I did the whole swap by the book; pm6 ecu, new wiring harness, new intake, injectors, the whole deal. I am in love with the new motor, but my sputtering problem persists. I thought it may have been a map sensor issue so I got one and installed it... it brought the idle down to the factory setting and it ran smoother for about two weeks, until two days ago. I was headed down the mountain and the engine sputtered again, it was not as drastic this time, but it was definitely the same issue under the same circumstances. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to throw out there, I am honestly a bit worried it is a fuel pump issue, but I am kind of out of ideas otherwise.
thanks,
Adam

My 91 DX has always done that. After rolling down a long hill in gear the engine won't go for a second or so, it may even stall out. Interestingly doing the same hill not in gear and letting the engine idle, it works normally. I think it may be a bug in the ECU software (I'm not expecting perfect performance out of the old DPFI setup anyway). But if you have gone to a MPFI system it could be something else.
