Default 94 civic 1.6L Trans woes

Im repairing my neighbors civic and she said the car went into gear. then when she rode up the street and stopped at a light and attempted to go again. it wouldn't go into gear at all. (she believes she heard some type of clunk.thud noise) Claims the shifter will go into the all gears but no response when in gears

The car is not by me so i will haft to be vague on some things :-(

Does the speedometer go up (even though the car is not actually moving) when you put it in gear and try to go? If so it is an axle problem such as a broken CV joint or one of the axles came loose from the transmission, which is common after recent service involving removing an axle. (The speedometer going shows that the gears in the transmission are turning but the power is not reaching the wheels.)

It could be either side. With both front wheels off the ground and the transmission in Park, turning one wheel by hand should make the one on the other side turn in the opposite direction. If it doesn't, look for where the motion is stopping.
