You probably need a new alternator. Much like starters, they get intermittent before going completely dead.

Don't do the disconnect the battery with the engine running test. In a modern car it risks causing a power surge that can damage the electronics. The proper test is to measure the battery voltage with the engine running. If you don't have a voltmeter you have no business messing with an electrical system.

With the engine off, touch the red (+) probe to the red (+) positive battery connector and the black (-) probe to the black (-) ground battery connector. The voltage should be around 12.5V.

Do the same with the engine idling to spec under no load (all accessories off). The voltage should be around 14.5V.

Do the same with the engine idling to spec under load (A/C and blower on max; brights on). The voltage should not drop too far below 14V.
