Default 96 EX went dead

ok this is a new one to me. recently one of my friends tried to set my timing. but all he did was crank the engine, and turn the dizzy counter clockwise(CCW). i got in my car for a test drive and it drove damn near the way it drove when i first got it...perfect. but a knockin noise caught my attention. i wanted to go home and immediately check my car out. but the more i drove, the knockin got louder, and on the interstate, my car kept dyin. so i finally get home, have my roommate come outside, and have him listen to the knockin when i rev'd up since that was the only time u could hear it. he said it sounded like something slappin the inside of the top part of the timing belt cover(TBC). like plastic hittin plastic. so we took off the top part of the TBC and checked the belt out. didnt see anything wrong with other than it was an aftermarket GOODYEAR one. the next day, he follows me as i try to drive my car 4 miles down the road to a mechanic, but half way the cars makes a winding noise and goes dead, and since then it wont crank up. mechanics couldnt look at it even tho i had a tow truck haul it, becuz their shop was so busy. so now my car is back in my garage, and im confused. could it be that my timing is off so bad that it wont crank up? cuz i heard turnin the dizzy CCW, is advancement? but what could the knockin noise have been? any help is appreciated.

was he adjusting the timing with a timing light.
i think a rod bearing went out and you lost compression - thus it will not start.
need to set the static timing and do a compression check

naw he just loosened up the 3 dizzy bolts, and turned it ccw. no timing light or anything was used. rod bearing? hmm i didnt even think of that. could be a good point. so if i set the correct timing settin itll crank up where i can get a compression check?

When you retard the timing, you also want to upgrade the octane silly.
