Talking 97 civic idle is weird

1st it was reving up and down after warmup/ fixed that cleaned the sensor up and tb and it idles fine when warm. now, i start it going to work. upon startup cold, idle is 1300rpm, then warms up and slowly dropps to 800rpm. is this normal? it can't be good in the winter -20below!

You have a vacuum leak my friend. Grab a bottle of starting fluid and start checking hoses. If the starting fluid makes the idle climb you have found your leak.

It's supposed to do that. It's good in the winter because the car would tend to stall out trying to idle at 800 rpm in cold weather. Somewhere in the service manual is a chart of idle speed vs. engine temperature showing it high on a cold engine and drops as it warms up.

With the engine warmed up, unplug the wire from the IACV and idle should drop to about 400 rpm (barely running). If the speed is still high with the valve unplugged, something is wrong.

Talking idle

ok i checked the vacum lines and their not leaking. to idle at 1300-1500 on cold start is normal? how would it build oilpresure, wouldn't it dry start the rodbearings and starve them of oil? + the valves would rattle.

im pretty sure it wouldnt mess anything up. honda's engineers designed it and its there for a reason.... you can clean it out and put it back together. maybe that will help you.
there is 7 pages and great pics and details.

The fast idle function is also programmed into the ECU. The FITV admits additional air when cold, but even without it the ECU will try to make it idle fast via the IACV.
