It's a 92 Si hatch. If you are interested, here's the same thread on Honda-tech:

The OP has an intermittent A/C problem. Sometimes blows cold and other times hot. When it blows hot, the condenser fan does not run and the compressor clutch does not engage. I therefore directed him to test the pressure switch and thermostat. If those are fine, a bad heater control panel seems most likely. The OP is currently struggling to learn how to do the necessary electrical tests.

I would think that since pressing the button repeatedly sometimes gets it to work, the problem is the button. It is officially replaced as a unit with the control panel.
Simplest test of the control panel would be to bypass it: jump the blue and red wire that connects the A/C button to thermo switch to ground. Leave everything plugged in and jam the stripped end of a test wire into the back of the thermo switch plug alongside the blue and red wire, so it makes contact with the metal part inside the plug. Connect the other end of the test wire to ground. The thermo switch is behind the glove compartment, you need to unscrew the hinges at the bottom and take the glove compartment out of the car to reach it.
Drive like that and see if you get steady cold (make sure to leave the fan on the whole time, or it may freeze up). If it runs steady, the problem is the control panel. If the light in the A/C button didn't stay on (I don't remember seeing that in the other thread) it could be the fan switch, though that switch is often handled as part of the control panel.

Next time it stops, note whether the light in the A/C button stays on or not. That can be a useful clue.
Then just touch the button and wiggle it some, not hard enough to actually click it, and see if the fan and compressor start up again. If they do it's almost certainly a bad control panel.

And the blower for the cabin vents also continues to work, right?

yes the only thing that doesnt work when it doesnt work is the plate that spins and the condenser fan from what i can see everything else works fine
