Default accelerate and the car chokes

Hey-
I'm new, I just bought a 1998 civic ex. Awesome car, but when I brought it home all of a sudden I noticed it had a problem. Sometimes when I'm in the first couple of gears and I'm accelerating the car seems to stutter a bit. It usually happens in the first second or two after I shift into a gear, and only when I'm on the gas. It just feels like it's not getting enough gas.
I haven't gotten under the hood yet, thought I'd get some advice first, but my first hunch is the fuel filter or fuel pump. Anyone have any suggestions to isolate the problem? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
thanks

Consider replacing the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.

Is the CEL ON?

No the CEL wasn't on. I fixed it. easy fuel filter swap. Just glad it wasn't more serious. Might stick this in the thread about solved issues in case someone needs.
