advice on replacing water pump
Ok the water pump is gone on my 98 lx, it's an auto with the 1.6, I've replaced plenty of Honda water pumps, but this is the first time I've had to replace a pump on this car, I'm aware that the timing belt has to be changed in the process, I have a gates belt and tensioner coming from Rock Auto, and I ordered the crank pulley holding tool, with the Georgia heat and humidity, I really don't feel like screwing with that bolt any longer then I have to. I don't have an air compressor anymore, so that's the best way to break it loose. First what direction loosens this bolt, normal bolt, or left hand threads? and any surprises to look for while doing this job? or just normal Honda timing belt stuff?
Most shops quote the belt, water pump and tensioner as the job when it is just time to replace the belt. If you are paying someone for labor it makes sense to replace all three at once than to have to go back and do it again before the next scheduled timing belt change.
OK getting ready to do this in the morning, rained today, can someone direct me to the FAQ on adjusting the valves in this car? since the valve cover has to come off anyway, and they were a bit noisy, time to adjust them.
What engine is it? For a 1.6 you either have a z6 (obd1 so I doubt that's what ti is), or a y7, or y8. Odds are it is a y7 or y8, so check out either the engine stamp, or if they intake manifold is stock look at that. If it is a y7 the throttle body is verticle set up, y8 is horizontal. The lash is probably going to be the same for the motors though, and probably the same as the guys d15 in the guide.
still working on it almost done, whoever owned this car before me made a complete mess out of every bolt under the hood, and still never got the original timing belt or pump out, so it's been a nightmare of fixing someones mess from before. if we have a sticky on changing the pump or belt, I have a Honda service bulletin I need to scan and post on it, the entire procedure for torquing the crank bolt has been changed,. The service bulletin came from Honda with the new crank bolt, the bolt has been changed too, all the new bolts are marked in the center with a 10, this is the new spec crank bolt.
