Default alternator wire

My question pertains to the alternator wire with the loop fastener thats bolted to the alt. My alternator went bad three days ago and i had it changed out, while it was being changed, the wire with the loop snapped at the fitting, the inside of the wire was GREEN and CORRODED, it went down about 3-4inches.....anyone know what that is or why that happens? i had the wire cut and a new connector crimped on. I want to know what preventions i can take for this. Thanks in advance for the help. Samantha
