ya i looked all around the booster and i cannt see any leaking fluid.... and when i got the car there was brake fluid in the trunk so i asume its been leaking for awhile....

 

I haven't heard you say anything yet that really indicates a brake fluid leak. Why do you think you have one? Are you losing brake fluid or is it just because the brakes are spongy? If the latter, then bleed the brakes to see if the sponginess goes away. If it doesn't, then you could also have a bad master cylinder. The possible fluid leak in the rear may be gasoline.

 

the fluid area didnt smell like gas when i started.

and yes its leaking fluid somewhere. takes ruffly 2weeks and then my brake light starts poping on and off from the brake cylinders low level.... i refill it and then the light stays off.

ive had to refill it 3 times now since i bought the car.

 

Does the location of brake fluid entry into the trunk help to guide you to the leaking line?

 

I think he meant the previous owner was carrying bottles of brake fluid around in the trunk, because he needed to top it up often too.

 

That's funny and possible. Nonetheless, if so, the focus on a possible leak in the rear may be misdirected as the "leak" may just be spilled brake fluid dripping out of the trunk.

 

well in the trunk everything looked clean enough in the trunk. only thing that was messy was some green tire seal slim but i wiped most of it up. but the messie area under the car was infront of the gas tank towards the drivers side. so isnt near the trunk area anyways

 

What you need is some indicator dye like that used to locate A/C refrigerant leaks. But I don't know if such a product exists or whether such dyes could be safely added to brake fluid or lines.

 

A dye test would be ideal but I don't think it exists. They have it for A/C, coolant (though the green dye in generic antifreeze lights up pretty well under UV anyway) and engine oil / hydraulic oil / ATF, but not brakes. Putting anything other than brake fluid into the brake system is a recipie for disaster.

 

Yeah, I was thinking more of adding trace amounts of some UV light-excitable dye directly to the brake fluid. Trace amounts would unlikely affect brake fluid performance and also could be flushed out of the lines after detecting the leak. Just a thought.
