Default a/c problem...need help please

was driving to work the other morning with the a/c on and it started squeling like a banchee!! I turned it off by the a/c button which was lite. A few times on my way in I tried turning it on again and it just squeled. When I got home that evening, I opened the hood turned the a/c on and the clutch on the compressor was going in and out and yes still squeling. the condesor was running, the fam is still blowing, but is now blowing warm air. All relays test good. My question is, could it be low or even out of freon?? It does idle up when the a/c is turned on. Thanks for any help in advanced

Sounds like you just need to replace the compressor pulley and clutch.

Compressor may have seized, or it could just be the belt is loose. See if you can turn the front plate on the compressor by hand (always turn counterclockwise, the way it normally rotates). If it is stuck, the compressor is seized up and major repairs are required. If the compressor seems free to turn, try tightening the belt.

Failure of the condenser fan will cause excessive pressure which puts a real strain on the compressor and belt. But it sounds like you already checked that.
