Default CEL

Good day folks! The other day I got a CEL, so I finally got it scanned. The mechanic said its the upstream O2 sensor. its a 97 1.6EX Sedan (Canaidan spec)

Couple questions:

1) could this be caused by anything else other then an 02 sensor? could something have killed it?
2) anyone have an idea what voltage/resistance I should have if I check the terminals?

any info would be great!

upstream? as in primary? Ususally a CEL is pretty trustworthy, maybe the sensor just went bad, after all it is a 10 year old car.

yes, the primary O2 sensor. Price I was quoted was $144 for the part, and $30 labor to instal it (Canadian dollars, not USD) does this sound close? I like to do stuff myself if I can, but if its been in the exhaust for the past 10 yrs its probably rusted in there solid. For $30 I'll let someone else fight with it!

Bah. Do it yourself. Its not hard at all. Literally, if you can use a wrench then you shouldnt have any problems. Search online for a new sensor. I also think there wouldnt be too much rust on it per say... just a little bit 'crispy'

that price sounds about right, if you don't mind paying someone else to deal with it.

got the part on order through another supplier for around $100 (gotta love connections) and I'll give it a shot myself if I can scare up a proper O2 socket. If I can't get it to move I'll pay someone to do it. I'll keep ya'll posted

Good news/Bad news time. Got the O2 sensor in, no problem at all. The knucklehead who installed the old one cross-threaded the old sensor but the manifold threads were fine. Sensor went in easily, and the CEL is gone.

Bad news...it appears I have a cracked exhaust manifold . Its one of those ugly mani/cat combos. Checked one local store: not in stock, $405.99. I'm thinkin an ebay header is the way to go...hook it up to the stock exhaust till I can scratch for a full exhaust. (Dang, wanted to do the head before exhaust...oh well)

ANYWAY, any brands I should look into or stay away from? I know OBX tends to be crap...but other then that, I don'tknow. Need to do this cheap, but don't want to buy another header in a year either [&:]

you have an EX with the manifold/cat thing? Thats odd.....normally EX's have the cat after the regular exhaust manifold.

And if youre looking for brands to stay away from, ebay is #1 on your list. DC is probably the most common brand, they're awesome. GReddy is good too, and a cheap but still quality header would be Megan.

Canadian spec EX is the same as a US spec DX. As far as I know the only line that got the v-tec is Si up here but I could be wrong.

check out megan for good stuff at good price. I got dc sports, nicer but a bit more expensive. Good luck, they're both cheaper than oem.
