Default Check engine light on

I got 103+k on a 2001 civic ex coupe.

Premium grade oil. Been changed often and has been taken care of.

Anyways the check engine light has been going on and off whenevever it feels like it.

Now it stays on all the time.

We noticed today if we held the throttle to hard even driving normal right before I hit 55 or so mph it peeks the rpm's higher then like shifts and drops back down.

So I checked my tran's oil. Its on the low mark but kinda over.

SO I started playing with the car and pushing it and it did not do it on my way home even when I pushed it hard.

What should I do about this light. I read you can check codes somewhere in the passengers side with some plug or something.

Just dont want to ruin anything.

Take it to austozone (or whatever) and have them check the code with a scanner. Write down the CODE (not what they tell you to fix) it will be in a format like this: "P0420" or something. Bring the codes back here

yeah it's free. Most parts stores, any repair shop, or inspection station should be able to do it. Just tell them you have a check engine light and you need to know the code.

I went to my local napa and they didnt have the thing as the guy who runs it said he would have to get it out of his own pocket.

I will go to a local car shop I guess and come back here with the code.

If air sensors are bad can they cause problems with the car?

How do you get your own code?

One problem. My car has just started not shifting gears right. Like it just doesnt shift. The check engine light is on again.

It shifts perfect when its not on and when its on it just wont shift into overdrive I guess.

I found a place to check the code. I guess I will have to take it down to the shop money or no money I need this fixed.
